    1966 DODGE CORONET 440 -- HEMI 4-SPD
This is one of those cars that you sometimes hear about but rarely run across. First off -- yes...it's a real 426 Hemi, 4-speed car. And yes...it's not an inexpensive car, we appreciate that this is a lot of money to ask for a 1966. But if you're in the market for a Hemi car, this one needs to be on your list. It's been treated to a world class restoration. So much so, that it will be impossible to touch on everything, but we will try to get across the highlights.
It was sold new at Podway Motors out of Lakewood, Ohio, back on February 5, 1966. It's a documented, correct coded (#73) Hemi car with a (#393) 4-speed. It is finished in the correct (EE1) Dark Blue Poly with correct (H4B) Highline Blue interior. It was marked as a (#691) sold order, and being a factory radio delete car -- we assume it was ordered for one purpose. As would be expected of a car in this pedigree, it is in the 66/67 Dodge registry as well as authenticated by Daimler Chrysler. The fender tag is present, as well as the Protect-o-plate. Also, original manual with original owner's name, and the original warranty card. One of the coolest things that's among the paperwork and documentation is a copy of a newspaper ad from 1968. The original selling dealer, Podway Motors, has this car listed for re-sale on their used lot, having had it come back on trade a couple years later.
The restoration on this car was done in Canada through the early 2000's. This was an extremely time consuming and expensive project. Over the 10-year restoration, a collection of NOS parts was accumulated for the build. The clock, gauges, grille, emblems, glass -- all factory correct replacements. Even an NOS speedometer was added from Sweden, showing km's instead of miles. Try and find one of those!
In addition, the previous owner's family were Dodge sponsored racers back in the era. Many authentic Dodge Super Stock parts were accumulated and used on this build. From a 1965 Super Stock donor car, this car received an original 65 Magnesium dual quad intake, 1965 factory super stock carbs and air cleaner, 65 water pump and Hemi engine brackets, and a factory 65 scatter shield. Any of those parts are like a needle in a haystack, let alone all of them on one car. Oh ya -- it also has a factory A990 Super Stock hood, not a reproduction...the real thing.
The original Hemi engine was long gone by the time the car arrived in Canada, so the owner decided on a 572 Mopar crate engine. With his racing connections -- he was able to get the magnesium intake manifold and carbs installed, matched and tuned during the engine build by Chrysler. The crate engine showed up with the 1965 intake assembly already on it. Pretty cool. The 3" TTI exhaust looks like it could've been factory installed, with perfect symmetry and bends. Out back is a big Dana running 3.54 gears.
As crazy as it might sound with the quality and dollar value of this car, it was actually built as a car that can be driven. Up front, a set of Nascar torsion bars were installed. The factory stance was dropped approximately 3" on all corners. A new Hurst shifter assembly was added to the original tranny/shifter, so it is solid and tight. 4-wheel discs were added on all the corners, to tame the big Hemi. These changes, along with the front and rear sway bars, make the car feel much more like you're driving a new one than a 1966 model.
One impressive note to describe the performance of this Hemi car was best expressed by the previous owner. He also owns a new 2018 Dodge Demon and has raced Dodge cars for years. He insists that this Hemi could run with his new Dodge Demon (granted, only to about 100 mph). It pulls extremely hard and is set up incredibly well. The power gets to the ground like no other muscle car we've ever driven.
So, as we started -- yes, it's not a cheap car. But, wow, is it an amazing work of art.
